Jieun thinks I'm odd because I'm a cheapskate, not with everything, but
with certain things. Food is one of them, in particular lunch time food.
About every time I go out for lunch, I bring water from work with me and
get something cheap. Don't get me wrong - I like good food, and when I eat
with Jieun, I take her to nice places. But when it's just me, the emphasis
is on cheap. Fortunately, there are a number of super cheap food deals so
it's not completely monotonous. Here are some of my favorite cheap deals.
- Wendy's $0.99 Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger - It's surprisingly large
for a junior burger, and it includes lettuce and tomato. A great deal! I
eat these at least once a week.
- Wendy's $0.99 Chicken Nuggets - Pretty good nuggets, better
than McDonald's, and only a dollar!
- McDonald's $1 McChicken Sandwich - I like this better than
Jack In The Box's chicken sandwich. Pretty good. But I hate the
McDouble.
- McDonald's $1 Snack Size Fruit and Yogurt Parfait - This is
my newest thing I get a lot. I dunno, it makes me feel ever so slightly
healthier. But yeah, it's reasonably tasty, even if the fruit is frozen
and not particularly fresh. This and a chicken sandwich and I'm good to
go.
- McDonald's 2 pies for $1 - To counteract the "healthiness"
of the fruit and yogurt above, sometimes I get this. So much for
nutrition. Anyway, yeah, usually they have apple pies, but recently
they've been spicing it up with different ones, like a pineapple pie,
caramel cream pie, and lemon pie. The last two you can actually feel your
arteries hardening as you eat.
- Jack In The Box's $0.99 Breakfast Jack - It's especially better
with sausage instead of ham, but some places charge you for the
substitution now.
- Jack In The Box's $0.99 Jumbo Jack - the best burger now that
the Whopper is so expensive.
- Carl's Jr's $1.29 Spicy Chicken Sandwich - It's a pretty good
spicy chicken, for pretty cheap. McDonald's sometimes has this Cajun
McChicken. Terrible. Stick with this one - a great deal.
- Wienerschnitzel's $2 Chili Cheese Dog and Chili Cheeseburger -
An incredible deal, a great volume/cost ratio. The Chili Cheese Dog alone
is $1.49. This is a deal you definitely need to get just once in a while,
for the sake of your intestines, but it's one of my favorite deals.
- Wasabi's $5.29 Teriyaki Chicken Bowl - ok, so $5.29 isn't that
cheap. Here's the thing. They serve so much that I can't finish it ever -
it lasts for two meals. And two meals of a relatively tasty teriyaki bowl
for $5.29 is a great deal. They have other bowls also, a "Korean" bowl, a
curry bowl, Thai bowl, Hawaiian bowl. Favorites are the Korean and the
curry. But yeah, two meals for around 5 bucks. Good stuff.
My Favorite Cheap Foods That Aren't Cheap Anymore
- Una Mas's $0.99 Fish Tacos - Una Mas used to have $0.99 Fish
Tacos on Friday. This was an incredible deal for pretty good fish tacos.
But it's no more.
- Burger King's rotating $0.99 deal - They just ended this. Used
to have a different regular menu item for $0.99 every day. Some of them
were awesome, like the chicken sandwich. This was my favorite chicken
sandwich growing up - it's big and good, and only a dollar! Two
cheeseburgers and two hamburgers for a buck are also a good deal. I don't
like the Big Fish sandwich very much though. But yeah, on the right day, a
very good, tasty deal. Too bad it's gone.
- Burger King's $0.99 Whopper - Another good deal for a decent
burger. Often on Fridays in high school we'd go get 2 Whoppers and water
and then play basketball. Burger King sucks now. Their value menu went up
from $0.99 to $1.29. It's an outrage, I tell you. All you can get for
$0.99 now is this dinky cheeseburger. Go to Wendy's.
- McDonald's $0.99 Filet O' Fish - Why O' instead of "Of"? Does
it really save that much time and space? Anyway, yeah, when this was a
deal, I got it at least once a week, sometimes up to three. Fish is good
for you, and less than a buck! If they went a little lighter on the tartar
sauce, it'd be perfect. I used to hate this sandwich growing up; no clue
why I like it so much now.
