What's on my mind: (6/25/01)

For those who care and those who don't

I've written about everything I'm going to say here before, so, it might be boring.

I'm convinced of two things. One, that life is suffering. And two, that everyone is going to die. I wrote about the first one before, and you might disagree or whatever. The second thing is incontrovertible, and I wrote about that before also.

More importantly, I believe is that in America, most people live in denial of both those things. At the very least practically so.

Like I wrote before, I truly believe that the reason the entertainment industry is so big in America is because people need so badly to forget the fact that life is suffering. Entertainment is just diversion. And that's fine, everyone needs entertainment. There's nothing wrong with it. But it makes no sense why we need it so much, be it movies, TV, video games, sports, or whatever. And why we pay so much for entertainment, why entertainers make so much money. Unless there's a deeper reason why we need it. And in my mind it's because people haven't learn to deal with that fact that life is suffering, so they'd rather forget it.

And like I wrote before, I really believe that most people don't think they're going to die. I was reminded of this in a Newsweek column from a while ago that I found incredibly insightful. Let me quote (liberally) from it. It's by Anna Quindlen.

Weird ending, but I thought it was incredibly insightful. I don't think she's saying that health or beauty is bad. Or even that everyone does it for the wrong reasons. She's saying that collectively, all these things are fostering the subconscious collective belief that death can be indefinitely deferred.

And I think it's true. There's a reason why the exercise and cosmetic industry is so huge, just like the entertainment industry. A good portion of people subconsciously believe and want to believe that they'll live forever.

Anyway, I totally agree with it. And I think it makes it hard for us Christians to share the truth. Two of the essential truths in Christianity is that man is separated from God, and that we need Christ to receive eternal life. But why should people care if they're so diverted that they don't see how their life separated from God is bad, and if they don't fully grasp the fact that they will die someday? It's hard.

I really believe that the reason so many Americans are so areligious (is that a word?) is because of that. And I strongly feel that if more people came to realize what's essentially true - that life is suffering, and that they will die, that they would be more religious. It's just America is so busy diverting and deceiving itself this doesn't happen.

Anyway, life is suffering and everyone's going to die. I wish everyone truly realized this.
