Princeton-By-The-Sea

The freshest locally caught fish can be found at the fishing piers at pillar point harbor in princeton-by-the-sea, just north of half moon bay. It's about 30-40 minutes from cupertino and makes for a great outing. So far as I'm concerned fresh fish isn't fresh fish unless you've bought it near the stink of a fishing boat's diesel engine. (I'm biased, I was born in a fishing town)

Fish Market

They have a fresh seafood market inside with many offerings, usually including scallops and they always indicate what is fresh, or previously frozen.

Ranch 99

I have had great luck at Ranch 99 Markets when I need to find fresh fish in the south bay. It is an large Asian market with 4 different tanks for live fish and crabs (really cheap at $2-3 a lb.), oysters, clams, as well as lots (15-20) of different kinds of whole fish in ice. Since most of their fish is uncut and you can easily judge its freshness by the scales, gills and eyes. They will clean and gut the fish for free and even deep-fry the fish if you want. Also, there is an entire aisle just for dry noodles and another for fresh, several deli departments where you can buy barbecue pork, ribs, peking ducks, and chickens. There is also a dim sum department, vegetarian to-go, a bakery, a butcher. Its a wonder!

Golden Phoenix

The Golden Phoenix supermarket in Mountain View (on the corner of Rengstorff and Middlefield) is also a decent place to buy fresh fish (live in tanks or on ice). It used to be an Albertson's, so it's huge. They have a good produce section as well.
