Mattress recommendations

Tempurpedic

Many recommendations for this. One negative, it's always hot.

Recommended vendors:

If you get a 3" 5lb density memory foam topper and put it on top of a hard mattress, you (and your back) will love it. it's about $230 and you can pick it up in SF & save a delivery charge. most of the "memory foam" mattress are just that - 3" of memory foam on top of 5" or more of regular foam

  • Sleepcare on Blossom Hill in SJ.

here are the layers:

MF4FS81 Memory Foam 4.3LB - Full Sheet - 82"x76"x 1" $63.19 MF5FS83 Memory Foam 5.3LB - Full Sheet - 82"x76"x 3" $254.47 LRFE82 Lux Regular Foam - Eggcrate - 82"x76"x 2-1/2" $33.76 LHQFFS84 Lux High Qual. Foam - Full Sheet - 82"x76"x 4" $110.79

total cost: about $500 delivered, and it is VERY comfortable.

the slabs of foam are slightly bigger than king size, so you need to cut them down with a knife. i made a queen sized bed, and had plenty of memory foam material left over to make some pillows ;-)

by using a mattress pad (the kind that wraps all around the mattress and around the bottom) the pieces of foam don't slide around on each other.

Mancini's Sleep World

  • I personally found Mancini's Sleep World to have the best salespeople and reasonable prices. Your best bargaining chip with any of them is to mention that you were looking for the model that they carry at Costco (the cheapest all around, but not necessarily what you want) so that you could lie on it and try it out. At that point the salesperson knows that you have done your pricing research and they're more likely to give you a better price. There is also a Mancini's on El Camino in Mountain View near Rengstorff.
  • We have had great experiences with Mancini’s.
  • I had a good experience with Mancini’s… in fact, I’m in the market to replace my mattress and plan on going back there. Their prices are competitive and the Sales staff was very knowledgeable and accommodating.

Sleep Train

  • in Colma. I believe the salesman who helped me was named Jeremy – good guy. We got a Cal King also – love it! Also, I got no interest financing for 2 years. Tough to beat.
  • we just got one at SleepTrain on deanza in cupertino. it was great
  • I have always had luck with Sleep Train store at McCarthy Ranch in Milpitas because they price match and give you 5% off the lowest competitor. And the best part is that you don't have to haggle. They are very upfront, deliver for free, remove the old mattress and put the new one in the same day, if you go in before 2:00 pm. One thing to note is that mattress names vary by the store. So even though the brand is the same (Simmons Beautyrest, for e.g.) each store can call it something different, thereby making it hard for you to compare. I would suggest taking down the coil count and other details and then ask for a price match. They even price match reliable Internet deals.

Mattress Gallery

Hey there, I bought my Simmons Beautyrest mattress at a local Mattress Gallery store – after trying very hard to order it online I found a better deal offline (and not all mattresses are shippable to CA due to Firecode restrictions).

Costco

I did the whole mattress thing a few years ago and came to the conclusion that mattress sales people are worse than used car salesmen. I ended up going to Costco, pricewise they couldn’t be beat. Their selection is somewhat lacking as they only carry Sealy Posturepedic mattresses. You also aren’t going to be able to directly compare the models to any other place because each retailer has a different name attached to each level of mattress for any particular brand.

They usually have a few models on the floor that you can try out plus, they have these little displays with mini mattresses the size of a small poodle that you can play with. Those models on the display are special order only but they deliver them for you free of charge. www.costco.com will generally show you the same thing as the display.

Dirt Cheap Mattress

I haven't used them, but I'm told Dirt Cheap Mattress is great.
