You can see my review of Reid-Hillview airports here with contact info (oriented to CFI training)

Nice-Air

I'm currently renting planes from Nice-Air at Reid Hillview.

Highly recommend instructor Lars Althoff. I did my initial training in Sacramento, but recently used Lars to do my biannual flight review. He's very good.

I was interested in a school without monthly dues, and this was the only one I found in the area.

You should probably expect somewhere around 50 hours of flying time before you are ready to take the practical test with a FAA examiner.

I've heard good things about Nice Air there as well.

West Valley Flight Club

West Valley Flight club flies out of PAO (Stanford Airport) and SQL (San Carlos). Probably one of the better clubs in the area with a wide verity of planes and such.

Cessna Pilot Centers

Cessna has a lot of good information about learning to fly at http://www.learntofly.com/

Diamond Aviation

  • I used to warn people away from Diamond Aviation out of San Carlos, because they only flew Diamond Katanas which if you wanted to fly outside of the Bay area could be a problem. But now you can get instruction from there in a variety of craft.
  • I also hear good things about Diamond Aviation in San Carlos, as well as West Valley Flying Club in San Carlos, Hayward, and Palo Alto.

TradeWinds Aviation

I took some lessons down at TradeWinds Aviation at the Reid-Hillview airport in San Jose. They were pretty professional, and have well maintained planes.

pa airport

oldest flying club in the country. great instructors

Kevin Sullivan

I take lessons with Kevin Sullivan ksullivn@yahoo.com

He is a private instructor and we fly out of Reid-Hillview airport in San Jose.

I can't recommend Kevin highly enough. He is an amazing teacher and has a great personality. He makes you feel very comfortable on the plane and I never had the feeling that he wasn't in control of everything. He is also very flexible when it comes to scheduling lessons and he offers a demo flight for free. His hourly fee is $50.

I hope you give him a try, he's truly a wonderful teacher.

AOPA

AOPA has some good information here:

I'm currently working on my private single engine rating at Amelia Reid Aviation at Reid Hillview airport in San Jose. I already have a commercial glider license, so I can't really speak from the point of view of someone who is just getting started.
