Bella Vista

  • Off skyline in Woodside. Overlooks the Bay... Haven't been there for many years, but it's been a popular restaurant for special occasions.
  • My husband and I like bella vista in woodside on skyline
  • Great food - spectacular view!
  • We had our engagement party and dinner at Bella Vista. It's a super old-school place with classic continental cuisine (steaks, pork chops, etc), tuxedoed waiters, fireplace, wood paneling, the whole mountain lodge sort of feel. It's up on the mountain on Skyline Blvd, south of 92. When it's clear out you can see the lights of the peninsula below you out the windows.

It's a really cool and special place.

Le Papillon

  • my wife and i have gone to chez tj in mountain view and le papillon in san jose for our anniversaries. we liked the 1st and *loved* the 2nd. the tasting menu and wine pairings were awesome.
  • Very strongly recommended; they catered our wedding five years ago and we go back every six months or so for a refresher course.
  • Le Papillion, technically in San Jose, but on the border with Santa Clara (ish)

Chez TJ

  • my wife and i have gone to chez tj in mountain view and le papillon in san jose for our anniversaries. we liked the 1st and *loved* the 2nd. the tasting menu and wine pairings were awesome.
  • Just had my birthday dinner at Chez TJ in Mountain View off of Castro. Very elegant, romantic, fixed-price menu, absolutely outstanding food. Definitely a culinary experience.

The Lion and the Compass

this was the place of our first date and we go back every year :)

Fleur De Lys (SF)

(2 recs) Fleur de Lys in San Francisco. Very romantic, very good.

Chantilly (Atherton/Redwood City)

Masa (SF)

La Fondue (Saratoga)

Michael Mina (SF)

Julius Castle (SF)

nice view, poorer food

The Mountain House

in Half Moon Bay. Such a romantic drive, great environment, excellent food, the perfect setting. I LOVED IT and I'm your typical girly, girl.

Cafe Gibraltar

Very good Mediterranean food and ambience. Be sure to reserve a booth. You sit on comfortable cushions.

Greens

If you're in SF you can't go wrong with either Greens (famous vegetarian place at Fort Mason with an amazing view of the GG Bridge) or Boulevard (on Mission at Embarcadero; consistently one of the best places in SF over the years). I've had very special and romantic dinners at both places.

Boulevard

If you're in SF you can't go wrong with either Greens (famous vegetarian place at Fort Mason with an amazing view of the GG Bridge) or Boulevard (on Mission at Embarcadero; consistently one of the best places in SF over the years). I've had very special and romantic dinners at both places.

Gary Danko

I am in the Pasadena office but SF is one of my favorite places. Not sure what 'the peninsula' means, geographically speaking, but by far the best restaurant, very elegant and romantic, is Gary Danko. It is a Mobil Guide 5-star restaurant - really, really great food. Don't know when you are going to dinner, but you have to call WAY in advance for reservations.

If you decide to go, you choose from a 3-, 4- or 5-course meal. You get to choose any 3, 4 or 5 things from the menu, so you're not limited, but just know that 3, MAYBE 4 if you're hungry, courses is enough.

La Fondue

  • is great -- one of my favorites.
  • One of my favorites is La Fondue in Saratoga- they have wonderful pre-fixe menus, and the cheese and chocolate fondues are to die for! They also have table top cooking, so that you're cooking your own meal (grilling, etc). It's a lot of fun and they also have nice quiet booth structures set

up.

  • If you like fondue, La Fondue is great (in Saratoga). Dimly lit, lots of courses- cheese fondue, meat, seafood, then chocolate fondue w/ yummy treats to dip in the fondue...you have to book far in advance but it's great, intimate, and different than the classic romantic restaurant... Just a thought

[www.998cuba.com Habana Cuba]

My boyfriend took me to Habana Cuba in San Jose :)

On Friday nights, they have a guitar trio entertaining the restaurant and performs personal serenades too.

The food is DELICIOUS .. try the mango mixed alcoholic drink .. forgot the name .. the avocado salad (their house dressing is amazing) and the corn soup! I had the lamb stew that night .. was delish!

Remember to make reservations and request a table upstairs since seating downstairs is a bit weird 'n away form all the action.

Farallon

Try Farallon, near Union Square in SF. Excellent service and decor, food was great, atmosphere is much less stuffy and snobby than one would except. It fit our definition of romantic short of heading up to Bistro Jeanty or FL in Napa. I've not heard a bad thing about it.

Top Of The Mark

I took my wife to the Top of the Mark in SF for our anniversary - on Friday and Saturday night they have live music and a fixed-price menu, and the food is excellent (if you like the two choices, otherwise you're in trouble...) The rest of the week I believe they have a normal menu...

Shadowbrook

It is a decent place to pay a visit.
