Kid Friendly Ski Areas

Leland High Sierra Snow Play

  • When my 2 boys were that age we took them to Leland High Sierra Snow Play at the recommendation of some family friends. We continued to go there until they reached the age where they wanted strap some skis on.
  • I have been there with 5 year old and some of my friend's younger kids. it's a great place for families and suitable for 1 day trip.
  • it is a days trip ( approx. 3 hrs each way). It does not have any skiing – only sledding etc.

Cottage Springs

  • We recently went to Bear Valley and spent the next day at Cottage Springs (10 miles west of Bear Valley on 4). CS has 2 hills where you can "tube" down. Our kids (8, 4, 4) had great fun there. CS should be doable as a day trip easily and tends not to crowded.

State

  • There are also the State of California snow play areas. They only cost you a parking permit to use but do not have any facilities (e.g. bathrooms, food …) You can buy the parking permits at REI and other gear outfitters.

Dodge Ridge

Pinecrest, CA – east of Sonora We skied at Dodge Ridge last year and I do not recall their being any place there for tubing of sledding. However, very nearby (about 10 minutes drive) is Pinecrest Lake. The lake is dry this time of year but the empty lakebed is a great place for sledding and there is no charge for parking or sledding.
