When I was growing up, I never swayed or added other physical flourishes in piano recitals. It just seemed fake to me. I always felt I could let the emotion come out in my playing without having to move my whole body. And for like a 10 year old to move like that just seemed fake to me. You didn’t need to make a show of emotion – let it come out in your playing. I was always about substance over form.

Incidentally, the expressiveness of my playing was my strength. I think I was technically sound but not proficient, and my highest marks were generally for my slower pieces, even though I liked playing them less.
