I actually have a ton of thoughts about work but don’t feel that comfortable talking about it. But I do want to talk a bit about youth. The culture at work is so insanely young, I can’t help but think about it all the time.

The thing that has struck me the most is this semi-naive, possibly somewhat arrogant attitude that they can do anything; it’s the typical attitude of the young. And what I realized is, it’s precisely that attitude that makes it possible for them to do it. They can change the world, and only them, because they alone are cocky enough to think they can. Old people never change the world. And what the old take to be experience, wisdom, and maturity is, in some ways, simply cynicism, that keeps them from being able to accomplish great things.

I don’t know if this makes any sense, but I have just been impressed by how much people have been able to get done, simply because they believe that they can. I find great power in that. And it’s really making me think about how I should approach the young.

From what I hear, once kids become teenagers they think they know everything, or at least much more than their parents. It seems like maturity is the process by which the old stamp that out of them. But I don’t know. It’s amazing what the young can achieve because they think they can. What I would like to do with Abby is find a way to encourage that attitude that she can do anything while stamping out only the teen-age condescension. Is that even possible?

This entry probably makes no sense, but yeah, I’m coming to feel that it’s wrong to look down on the arrogance of the young. The young will change the world. The future belongs to dreamers. Boring.
